As published in the print edition of CareerXroads 2002

American Advertising Federation
    http://www.aaf.org
American Advertising Federation (AAF) has joined the Community Career Network (Search "jobs"), an internet network of job sites (Boxwood Technology) for industry-specific professional and trade assoc., publications and educational institutions. Recruiters pay $150 for one posting or $500 per month for unlimited postings. Job seekers who apply to individual positions are also asked if they want their resume to be public or kept confidential. Job seeker is advised that it is their responsibility to remove personal info. The association's membership is public something we'll never understand. There is no way to determine how many jobs are really posted on this site. One valuable asset is their annual listing of more than 1500 college internships. This publication is sent to each student chapter and provided via mail for $10 to others. Links to additional internships are provided.

American Assoc. of Critical-Care Nurses
    http://www.aacn.org
American Assoc. of Critical-Care Nurses launched AACN Career Opportunities in April 1998. Employers seeking critical care nurses can post their openings online for $200 for 60 days (over the cost of their journal's print ad). Positions are listed here by title then easily scanned by location, posting date, full time, part time or contract. The association publishes several journals and offers print and online options. Job seekers who are members of this association have access to the freshest job openings ahead of the general public. Recruiters can place ads through Slack, Inc. 800-257-8290 x 249 Kathy Huntley

American Chemical Society - JobSpectrum.org

Over 60 volunteer consultants, all ACS members are available. Resumes can be submitted for feedback as well. Employed members pay $6.60 per line for situations wanted ads with unemployed posting for free. Employers and job seekers are also invited to participate in National or Regional "Employment Clearing Houses" where job interviews are arranged at various conferences. Cost is a few hundred dollars.

American College of Healthcare Executives
    http://www.ache.org
American College of Healthcare Executives has over 30,000 members and great services. This organization has no idea about the value of their database. All resumes are easily accessible...and free. Excellent design allows recruiters to view a summary and drill for details. Jobs can be accessed by members and are free for recruiters to post. A message board with an "ask the expert" feature is an added value. On our visit the topic was: "strategies for recruiting and retaining your nursing staff". If you are an executive seeking employment or an organization seeking talent in this field, this site is a no-brainer.

American Culinary Federation
    http://www.acfchefs.org

Resumes are date stamped and can be viewed by employers without charge. Hundreds of jobs are posted(for members only) with 750 + resumes available for viewing for free. American Fisheries Society
    http://www.fisheries.org/jobs.html
The American Fisheries Society launched their site in March 1999 and maintains openings in research and teaching in the sciences. Members can post positions for fee while outsiders pay $350. Jobs are broken down into BA/BS level (long term positions), professional (MS level), Ph.D., student and temporary opportunities. We especially liked the opportunity for "Gillnet Observers" to spend 1-15 days living aboard a commercial vessel collecting data on sea turtles, pelagic fish and sea birds. All jobs are dated for freshness although some were mighty salty.

American Institute of CPA's
    http://www.aicpa.org/
Confusion reigned when we found that the American Institute of CPAs and it's state society partners were competing with themselves. The AICPA site serves a 330,000-member association...and anyone else who wants to look. New ads that appear in The Journal of Accountancy, the monthly publication of the AICPA, are searchable here by job title. Recruiters pay $80 to post a job for 4 weeks. It is amazing to us that more jobs are not posted on this site. Then we discovered CPA2Biz Career Center (http://www.cpa2biz.com) where recruiters can post a position for $200 for a 30-day run and a resume database that can be accessed for $1,500. Recruiters are automatically sent new resumes that match their positions as they are posted to the site. Only AICPA members can access the jobs. both sites appear to represent the same organization. Go figure.

daVinci Times
    http://www.davincitimes.org
daVinciTimes was designed as a collaboration of upstate New York businesses (with primarily engineering/IT jobs) who felt that working together to draw more technical talent to the area was a constructive alternative to simply competing for scarce resources. Now with 58 corporate members, this model started in January 1998 proves corporations can collaborate to recruit talent. Job seekers can search by keyword, job categories, education or salary to find their job of choice. All jobs are date posted. We have always appreciated the story line of the site and the creative toys, tools and resources it has developed to engage visiting engineers. A "resume wizard" offers step-by-step formatting for a "perfect" profile. Visitors can peruse real estate, obtain spousal job hunting assistance and check out commute time calculators. Member corporations can join for $1,000 to post 10 openings and view the resume database for $250/month, a 6 month min. Features soon to come are pre-employment questions. DaVinci times is always trying new ideas and willing to listen to recommendations. They've worked hard to build a community model.

IEEE is becoming a "members only" site- only members can apply to jobs online (very few of the openings have direct contact information). Search results show the date the posting expires but not the date that the job was posted (similar to many European sites).

Recruiters pay $.75 cents per word with a 50 word minimum to post an opening for 7 days. Job seekers pay the same for posting their resume. A map of the USA can be searched first for region and then for a job category. All job categories have the number of postings next to each category. Administrators, coaches, internships, it is all here. Site has an affiliation with the National Federation of State High School Associations that post high school openings (ncaa.thetask.com/nfhs/market/ads).

New England Journal of Medicine
    http://www.nejm.org/

Recruiters can post jobs for $500 for a four-week run and the site does notify people who have signed up for a "job alert". Resumes and job listings are date posted. We only found 3 job listings on our last visit. Proves you can have the right product but you still have to advertise it.

Physics Today Online
    http://www.aip.org/pt
The American Institute of Physics reaches 120,000 physicists and engineers worldwide. Unfortunately AIP can be confusing- they accept job postings in two places for the same site. The cost of posting a job online on "Career Services" is $18.00 per line. The cost to place an ad with "Physics Today" is $30.00 per line. Job seekers search by keyword, or job category (industry and optics, academic, computing, government/FFRD/other). There were 303 positions listed on our visit. Reserve Officers Association
    http://www.roa.org
The Reserve Officers Association's (ROA) Career Center offers web-based job capabilities for assisting military personnel in transition. Jobs are posted at TAO Online - Transition Assistance Online. With almost 80,000 members, ROA has a constituency that is underrepresented. Disciplines as far ranging as advanced communications technology, personnel administration, and project supervision can be found. Once a recruiter posts a job they are given access to the resume database. A company looking for applicants with a military background to fill defense-related requirements would be remiss if they didn't check out one or more of the many military transition sites available on the web.

Sci Jobs.org
    http://www.scijobs.org
SciJobs.org targets scientists with considerable skill. Jobs can be posted for $2 per day. Site would rather link to corporate site's job pages then have recruiters post jobs. Owners advise that they go out to corporate sites and pull down research job links to this site each week. Recruiters can access the site's resume bank for $25 a week. Access is only given to employers (no headhunters). Recruiters may want to think about becoming a preferred employer to get their postings better "position". Jobs can be emailed to registered subscribers (10,000 +) who have requested the information. Recruiters pay $150 per e-alert. Openings are for post docs, bioinformatics/LIMS, scientific writers, professor/lecturers. Science Careers, launched 1996, is an important benefit for members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). "Career Links" include advertisers who have purchased banners to their job sites. Science typically sponsors 4 career fairs a year to attract pharmaceutical and biotechnology talent for their advertisers. Access to the resume database costs $3,000 to view the 9,000 + resumes. Close to 17,000 scientists receive job alerts via email and recruiters can target specific segments of this group for $550 or spend $2,000 to send a posting to all. Job seekers can view jobs by various disciplines and each has the # of openings displayed. The site's search engine requires a little too matching for our tastes but it works. Keep it simple.. Employers wanting to target the scientific community need to review all that they can do here.

Soc. for Human Resource Management
    http://www.shrm.org
SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) has a sleek new look and continues to lead the pack as a model for association sites on the web (OK, we are biased). Still, the awards they've received, the results they achieve and their Help Wanted contribution to SHRM's bottom line supports our opinion. Job listings that will eventually see print in the monthly tabloid HRNews are posted immediately to the Net (few other print publications have yet to understand that sense of urgency). Positions can be viewed throughout the US by location, title, and date of posting or keyword search. A handful of international openings were also listed. Total openings by state can also be found. Cost to post a job is $20 per line or $30 with the print. You do not have to be a member to view the job postings. However, only members can register to receive notification of new positions via e-mail. Members have access to the membership directory- a great recruiting tool. With over 160,000 members and visibility to non-members, this is the 1st place to post a HR opening.

    http://www.scedir.org

Volunteer Match
    http://www.volunteermatch.org
VolunteerMatch brings volunteers together with non-profit organizations. If it is time to give something back, sign up online and check out the suggested assignments in cities throughout the USA. Volunteers only need to place their zip code and the site does the rest. Opportunities are displayed by date of posting with codes that reflect if they are for: K - kids, T - teens, S - seniors, G- groups. There are over 16,000 organizations listed with over 30,000 opportunities. Site also has an email newsletter to keep you up-to-date on this organization. Entrepreneural owners of the site make their $$$ by licensing a private version with their database of volunteer opportunities to large corporatons. Amazing.
